I’m not being troll gasoline anymore

I hate what a few specific trolls have done to my life in the name of their agendas. I am now implementing a personal ‘do not respond to trolls’ policy. I fell for 90% of their traps and made myself look like a troll. I was baited into doing all kinds of things that are against my character and people frowned upon. I should have listened to the advice of some people who told me to just ignore it. I should have learned from one other individual who has been harassed for years by the same troll.

I’m sorry to those who I dragged into this year long flamefest. It’s over now, the troll destroyed my way of life. I’m done with him and he is a non-person now in my mind. After today I will not even acknowledge his existence with the people who talk about him.

Again, Sorry to anyone who was dragged into this.

Google Go for Fedora 13 (64-bit)

Hi Folks,

I’ve made a set of packages that will install on Fedora 13 to enable Go Programming. I have a set of three packages, the go compiler, emacs syntax and vim syntax. I would like to thank Konrad Meyer for a majority of the work. My changes in this build include the following:

- Rebuilding from the latest snapshot. (6g version 5691+)
- Modified spec file to fix the file path of the vim syntax files (upstream changed stuff around).
- Added hg to the end to satisfy Fedora’s Packaging guidelines (I want this to be a F14 Feature)

I will also be making changes to these packages in the near future in case anything needs to be done for compliance with official package guidelines.

Thanks for trying them out. Feel free to contact me if there are any problems.

Toronto G20 Violence

I’ve been checking up on this all day and the media has been blaming anarchists for causing all the violence. While these world leaders are responsible for the deaths of thousands of people, poverty, and some organized crime.

Here is one very entertaining video. There are more all over YouTube but this one shows a guy vandalizing a police car while standing on top of it (it also gets set on fire).

I do not advocate violence, but I DO believe the damage to inanimate objects to be VERY entertaining (Who didn’t laugh at the printer that got what it deserved in Office Space?).

Dude, Get an Ubuntu Dell

Dell isn’t stupid and to get this statement from them is awesome. The same applies to any GNU/Linux Distro which is prepared similarly to Ubuntu.

6) Ubuntu is safer than Microsoft® Windows®
The vast majority of viruses and spyware written by hackers are not designed to target and attack Linux.

This comes from Dell’s website. A website promoting Ubuntu Linux and compares it to Windows! LOL!

Here is a link to a screenshot in case it gets taken down.

Chris Blizzard on HTML5, Apple and Google

Theres an article today on The Register UK called ‘Mozilla man blasts Apple and Google for HTML5 abuse‘ which I found a good read. It goes on to attack Apple quite a bit over it’s faux HTML5 demos (the ones that only work in Safari). I found that enlightening and it made sense. After a while though Chris got on my nerves.

“The big problem is that html5 has come to mean a lot of things, mostly thanks to Google. They’ve basically been riding that and flogging it and making it their own. (That and performance — simple, great marketing messaging. I appreciate it, even if the dishonesty of it makes my blood boil),” Blizzard says, referring to Google’s constantly claiming that Chrome is the fastest thing on the planet.

Well guess what Chris, Google added HTML5 support well before your browser did. There is also no dishonesty to make your blood boil. What’s non standard about the HTML5 in Chrome? Sounds like you’re jealous because Firefox is the slowest thing on the planet and you’re mad that Google can make a BETTER browser.

What about the open source WebM format? is that not open as well? Same with their browser. Chris Blizzard goes on to make some pro microsoft comments suggesting IE won’t attempt to corrupt the HTML5 standard.

“Even stodgy old Microsoft, who has been doing their best to hold back the web for nearly a decade, understands this and you’ll see it throughout their marketing for IE9. (Their marketing phrase is ‘same markup’ – watch for it and you’ll see it everywhere in their messaging). The idea that the same markup, even with mistakes, will be rendered exactly the same. HTML5 represents the chance for browsers to work together and find common ground.”

I think I’m seeing a growing trend of pro-microsoft statements from Mozilla. What’s next, recommendations of using Bing? (Wait…. they did do that…)

The Perfect Desktop Articles

Is anyone getting tired of these poorly put together ‘The Perfect Desktop XX Distro’ articles seen all the time on Lxer? I am. I dislike the software selection choices for various reasons (some being better software, some being better intergrated).

The Perfect Desktop – Fedora 13 -i686 (GNOME)

The first problem I had with the article was just seeing it’s link on Lxer. People are still recommending and using 32-bit software. These people needed to be locked up for mental illness. Well at least they SAY it’s Gnome, instead of calling it the default desktop. They ruin it however by making users install mono applications like F-Spot, and a weird assortment of proprietary applications which HAVE NO PLACE in Fedora.

Applications included that suck and their reasons:

F-Spot: Infected with Mono Technology
Google Picasa: Proprietary, Digikam is in the repo.
Opera: Proprietary, get the hell out.
Flash Player 10: Proprietary, get the hell out. Install Gnash or wait for WebM.
Evolution: Shitty clone of a shitty e-mail client. Thunderbird is fine, why install 2?
aMule: the *mule network is bullshit
Azureus/Vuze: slow, use ktorrent, transmission
Skype: Proprietary, get the hell out.
Google Earth: Proprietary, get the hell out.
Xchat IRC: Linux development is not priority, the author releases a Linux version based on older code. Windows Shareware license. Use Konversation, irssi, chatzilla, or many others.
Adobe Reader: Proprietary, get the hell out. Okular, xpdf and whatever gnome has default is better.
Banshee: Infected with Mono Technology. Amarok is better anyways.
XMMS: No possible use for this obsolete and non-updated legacy piece of software. Dead upstream.
Real Player: Proprietary, get the hell out.
VirtualBox OSE – KVM is BETTER, and VERY integrated into both the Linux kernel and the Fedora distro itself.

People don’t install GNU/Linux so that they can run all their proprietary shareware and non-free apps. The goal is to get away from that bullshit.

Another thing that pissed me off:

Empathy IM Client – multi-platform instant messaging client (formerly known as Gaim)

Note: Completely fucking wrong, Empathy is a shitty brand new IM with nothing to do with Gaim/Pidgin.

Mono is taking over… Even towns!

Mono is aptly named after a disease as it infects its way into various venues. It first took form as a Novell creation, then infected its way into Ubuntu. After this the infection spread to Ubuntu based distributions and some of the mainstream distributions such as Fedora. However with Fedora, the infection is now opt-in (optional installation of mono apps is required). They took Tomboy and F-Spot out of the default LiveCD due to space constraints on the CD (This is the same reason mono boosters used to try to get rid of Rythmbox from Ubuntu). Meanwhile Moonlight is banned by Redhat legal (ForbiddenItems).

Anyways, I was on my way home from Wasaga Beach, Ontario when I noticed the ‘Town of Mono’. The Mono infection has spread beyond my wildest dreams. What would it be like to live in such a town? The taxes would be high as resource usage would skyrocket beyond normal towns…

Are you allowed to dump your useless junk everywhere because garbage collectors will take care of it? :)

town of mono
They are both communities with a low population count.

Nobody ever got fired for buying Microsoft (just sued)

The Quebec government illegally paid Microsoft $720,000 since 2006 for the migration of 800 workstations to Microsoft software. According to the laws they were required to perform a thorough and documented search for alternatives if the cost of any expenditures exceeds $25,000. I heard about this case a while ago myself and I am really surprised at the results, I assumed Microsoft would get away with it just like every other illegal thing they get away with. Unfortunately for the Quebec government, people care and don’t want their hard earned tax dollars going to a foreign monopolist.

The Quebec governments reasoning behind not obeying the law (serious and documented search for alternatives)? Their employees were already familiar with the software. Vista in 2006? Familiar with it? How is this? It had just been released. Government workers aren’t the brainiest of the bunch either, I doubt they were familiar with any of it at all. In fact the purchase of Vista and Office 2007 were upgrades, each requiring new training (these are government employees after all).

Unfortunately the Judge wouldn’t reverse the purchase so nothing is really being done about it. At least it can be confirmed – Quebec broke the law by buying from Microsoft.

Quebec’s government broke the law by buying software from Microsoft without considering offers from other vendors, the province’s Superior Court has ruled.

If Mono innovates then I’m the King of Canada

The SD times has announced their ‘SD Times 100‘ for 2010. The SD Times recognizes top leaders and innovators of the software development industry. However upon looking at the list you’ll see two names that stick out like sore thumb: ‘Microsoft‘ and the ‘Mono Project‘.

How is Microsoft considered an innovator? They buy out companies and developers to produce their substandard software. They hired Anders Hejlsberg who was Chief Engineer at Borland who worked on Turbo Pascal and managed the team who made Delphi. He was used to corrupt the Java standard with J++ (leaving out Sun features). After that he was put in charge of creating C# when Microsoft was forced to start over after being sued by Sun for it’s dirty java tricks. When developing C# they basicly copied the innovation of Sun’s Java. Silverlight is a copy of Adobe’s innovation, and will be trumped with HTML5.

Upon inspection we came across an article on the SD Times website which was explaining what it was looking for in the SD Times 100 nominations which I will quote below:

The SD Times 100 looks for companies, non-commercial organizations, open-source projects and other influencers that have determined a direction that developers followed. Last year, 100 companies were recognized in 14 categories.

Source: SD Times 100 Nomination Announcement

I also have a problem with the Mono Project being on the list. What have they actually ‘created’ or ‘innovated’ up to now besides copying everying Microsoft has done? They haven’t determined any developer direction as C# has been slowly growing. In the TIOBE index its highest rating was 6.258% on December 2009 which has slowly grown from 0.384% since August 2001.

Mono is nothing but a copy of Microsoft’s C# language. Any direction in C# would be attributed to Microsoft only. They own both the standard and the patents based on it (including the non-ecma patents which only Novell can legally use in Mono).

Novell attributes the success of the Mono Project to the February 2009 launch of Moonlight 1.0, the September 2009 launch of MonoTouch 1.0, the November 2009 launch of Mono Tools for Visual Studio and the December 2009 launch of Moonlight 2. Source: Novell News.

Earth to Novell: Moonlight isn’t an innovation, it’s a copy of Silverlight. Silverlight isn’t even popular at all among developers (even Flash is more popular). Both technologies are hitting the backburner as HTML5 has been hitting the news more than Silverlight and Flash. The only thing historic about President Obama’s historic inauguration on Silverlight is that it’s the first time the public caught his lies about open technologies.

Other bad examples were MonoTouch and Mono Tools for Visual Studio. Did Apple not just recently ban stuff not written in C/C++ or Objective C? How great can Mono Tools be to the world when C# is only 6.258% on TRIOBE? and it’s an addon for someone elses innovation?

In the end i’m not totally surprised. The article mentioned the use of Twitter which means that people were gaming the system in favour of MSFT and Mono by ganging up together to retweet Mono-related news.

I wonder what we will see from Microsoft and the Mono Project in the future. Perhaps this will entice them to actually innovate? Much like Obama’s ‘Call to Action’, where receiving the nobel peace prize inspired him to work harder. We can only wait and see.

Migration Plan: Fedora 13

Over the next few days I’ll be transferring the server over to Fedora 13. This will give me the latest versions of the stuff I use which is something I prefer because I hate old software. I also update frequently and have no issues keeping to that schedule. Currently the server runs Ubuntu Server 10.04 but I no longer want to give Canonical credit for running pwnage.ca

Advantages:

- SELinux is better than AppArmor.
- YUM(with Presto) is better than APT-GET or Aptitude.
- Pwnage.ca will be able to tailor custom Fedora ISO files.
- Redhat and Fedora people actually work WITH upstream.

Other notes:

I’ll be making an RPM repo for Fedora soon with Google Go packages. Eventually i’ll get this into the main repository with the proper approval (requires sponsorship). I also plan to package up software written with Google Go. This stuff will show up soon…
